Description
In 1878 William Brierly established a brewery at 45/95 North Chicopee Street in Williamansett, Massachusettes. McNirney & Coyne operated the brewery from 1878-1887. Holyoke took over from 1887-1890.The last two breweries at this location where this keg originated were Hampden Brewing Co. (1890-1899) and Springfield Breweries Co., Hampden Branch, which was headquartered in Springfield, Massachusettes from 1899-1918.
Brewery operations were shut down by national prohibition in 1920 and it wasn't until 1933 when brewing was resumed after U-Permit No. MA-U-109 was issued. This keg is marked Hampden Branch which dates this rare keg between 1899-1918, just prior to prohibition.
This piece has not changed hands in half a century. It was discovered 50 years ago by an astute collector in Arizona.
This fine example of pre pro breweriana is completely solid, condition is excellent. The weight of the keg is 33 pounds and it stands 18 1/2'' high. The top and bottom are 13" and 16'' at the middle.
Between 1933 and 1950 Hampden produced ale, light beer, mild ale, and porter. Other breweries at this location included Drewrys, Piel Bros., Dawson, Fitzgerald, Hedrick, and finally Regional brewing Company. The brewery ceased operations and closed in 1975.
