In high school Simpson starred at Lima Senior, was named Ohio’s Mr. Basketball in 1991 and 1992. He had his #3 retired in 2013 and was named to the first class of the Lima Senior Hall of Fame in 2018.
After graduating Simpson would go on to play for Ohio State, later transferring to West Virginia. As a Buckeye he was named Big 10 Freshman of the Year.
While at OSU his troubles with the law would see him being released from the team. In September of 1994 Buckeye Athletic Director Andy Geiger announced that Simpson was off the team and his scholarship had been revoked.
After transferring to West Virginia the troubles continued for Simpson, in September of 1996 following a hit-and-run accident in May he was released from the team. Over the years his run ins with the law have continued.
