    (signed on verso) for 80 shares of capital stock ( per share). Company capital was

    president Edward P. Ricker
    and treasurer C. S. Smith. Certificate is about 8.5” x 11.” Black print with green borders and underprint.
    The Hercules Consolidated Mining Company president was Edward Payson Ricker (1847 – 1928), a businessman and politician who was one of the six children of Hiram and Janette Bolster Ricker, of Poland, Androscoggin County, Maine (see attached 1926 photo of the six Ricker children – Edward P. Ricker is third from the left). In 1903, Edward P. Ricker conceived of the idea of bottling the spring waters found at his family’s Poland Spring Resort, which was developed in the 1890s on Ricker’s Hill, with views of the White Mountains. Edward Ricker worked with Washington D.C. architect Harry Wickerson, to plan and develop the water bottling plant and spring house, which were completed in 1907.
