The Penn-Wyoming Copper Company (which was purchased by the United Smelters, Railway & Copper Company in 1909) owned numerous subsidiaries in mining, utilities, pipe lines and rails. The company’s mine office was at Rudefeha, Carbon County, Wyoming (in the Grand Encampment Mining District). Operations of the Penn-Wyoming Copper Company were initially hampered by lack of rail facilities, but the Saratoga & Encampment Railway was completed by this company at a cost of million. The Penn-Wyoming’s history was marked by a series of scandals and assorted mishaps (the 1908 Copper Handbook devoted nearly 8 pages to this company). Lands controlled by the company included the holdings of the Battle Lake Tunnel Site Mining Company as well as the Ferris-Haggarty Mine, discovered 1898. Massive debt and shady operators had the 1910 Copper Handbook suggesting that “the whole lot should be jailed.”
Penn-Wyoming Copper Company’s Encampment Tramway Company operated a 16-mile tramway from the Ferris-Haggerty Copper Mine to the smelting and reduction works at Encampment which was said to be the longest aerial tramway in the world. Penn-Wyoming had substantial holdings including mineral lands, coal lands, mill site, limestone quarry, timber lands, and the town sites of Encampment, Wyoming, including the Rudefeha, and Rambler Mine claims encompassing 1,373 acres located in and near Encampment, Wyoming. Penn-Wyoming also controlled, through ownership of 90% of capital stock: Haggerty Copper Mining Company; Encampment Smelting Company; Encampment Tramway Company, Encampment Pipe Line Ditch Company; Encampment Land & Townsite Lot Company, Carbondale Coal Company; Emerson Electric Light Company; Saratoga & Encampment Railroad Company; and North American Mercantile Company.
