Description
Here is a heavy pottery beer mug that probably dates to the 1900-1920 era and was likely manufactured in Germany although there are no marks beyond the "12" on the base. One side advertises Hupfel's Beer and Mallard Whiskey. The other side advertises a specific business owner named Thomas J. Torpey who likely operated in the NY towns of Peekskill and Ossining. On the front of the mug is a humorous poem about camels going 8 days without a drink. The overall condition and displayability of the mug is good to very good. However, there are imperfections that need to be mentioned. I do believe that two of them are manufacturing flaws. It's possible that all of them are but of that I'm not sure.
One flaw that I think was done during manufacture is on the front of the mug on the green stripe near the bottom and almost directly below the "t" in the word "think." There is a small, slightly rough protrusion in the pottery that you can both see and feel. There is also an indentation on the green stripe near the bottom on the left side almost directly below the "d" in the word "Mallard." The green stripe is painted right on top of it, so I do believe this, too, is a manufacturing flaw.
The flaws that may or may not have occurred during manufacturing or during firing involve cracks. The most noticeable one is at the base of the handle. It starts in the middle and goes up the right side, appearing to end by the midway point where the lower end of the handle is applied to the mug itself. Another almost imperceptible crack starts on the left side of the lower handle and runs in a curve underneath the words "Mallard Whiskey." It ends right where that protrusion that I mentioned earlier on the front of the mug is. That's what leads me to think that it might have occurred during manufacture. This crack does not appear to go all the way through to the inside of the mug. Finally, there appears to be a curved crack inside the mug that starts on the bottom and runs up the side a little ways. It does not carry through to the outside of the mug. To be perfectly honest, it almost looks like it could be a worker's hair that fell into the mug and got glazed over, but I'm going to call it a crack.
Otherwise, the top edge of the mug is very good with no chips or problems that I can either see or feel. Likewise, the bottom edge is good. There are several rough spots and indentations, but all of them are glazed over so I have to assume they were in the mug when it left the factory.
