EDWIN BOOTH is considered by many to be the greatest American actor of the 19th Century. His Hamlet was unrivaled. It is unfortunate that Booth's theatrical achievements are often overshadowed by the notoriety of his brother, John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. But his place in American theatre cannot be overstated. Lawrence Barrett was also an esteemed actor of the 19th Century. He and Booth often toured together and one of their most successful pairings was with Barrett as Othello and Booth as Iago. This program announces their appearance in
OTHELLO
on February 16,1888 in Dallas.  Silk programs are rare today and, even in the 19th Century, were produced only for the most special theatrical events. When two of America's foremost actors appeared together in one of Shakespeare's most heartrending tragedies, those performances were special and merited exceptional attention. Hence, the printing of this program which is rare indeed. Rare because of the fragility and fleeting shelflife of silk. Rare because it captures the joint appearance of two of America's most distinguished actors. And because it is an important historical memento 133 years old and in excellent condition. This program has no stains. Edges are uniformly fringed. Its silky sheen has been only slightly diminished over the years. The print itself seems unfaded and is still eminently readable throughout. There are very slight bends at upper right and lower left corners, each of no more than 1/4". This is a very rare theatre artifact indeed and perfect for display.
