The Pilgrim Gold Mining Company lode mines were located in Sierra County, California at an elevation of 4,573 feet in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the American Hill Mining District. The mines were located along Wolf Creek near the mining town of Alleghany, California, which was named in 1859 for the Alleghany Tunnel Mine that fueled the growth of the town when it struck gold four years earlier. The Pilgrim Gold mining Company owned patented lode mining claims on 47 acres, plus 296 acres of placer mining claims. The famous Sixteen-to-One Mine, near Alleghany, has been in operation since the days of the California Gold Rush of 1848.
