"# 124 issued on June 11, 1855 to Lucian B Brooks for 2 shares. Signed by President, A. P. Cather and Secretary, C. T. H. Palmer. Palmer, a banker in Folsom, operated the Wells Fargo office and adjacent assay office in the same town. Pen cancelled. Vignette of Mercury figure. Lith. Britton & Rey. Mormon Island was located on the South Fork of the American River, three miles from the junction with the North Fork. It was actually a sand bar, not an island. According to Gudde, it was the first regular gold camp after the discovery at Sutter's Mill. Two Mormons discovered gold at the spot on March 2, 1848. Gudde argues that this is where the California Gold Rush began. Mormon Island is now under Folsom Lake. "
